Aristotle said, "Homer, more than any other poet, has taught others how what is untrue should be presented, i.e., in such a way as to produce false reasoning. Whenever one thing is portrayed as existing or happening because a former thing exists or happens, men tend to believe that if the latter is true, the first must exist or happen. But this is not true. Therefore, if the antecedent to a thing does not exist and the thing itself can exist or happen only if the antecedent does exist, the poet must center on presenting the thing itself; for our assurance of the fact that the thing itself is true makes our minds falsely infer that the antecedent is also true."
